Bodenmann, Siegfried (Author)
In this paper I intend to study the relations between the epistolary practices and the scientific controversies of the early modern period through the prism of the extensive correspondence of Leonhard Euler (1707-1783). In particular I shall focus on the more or less vigorous disputes that Euler had with Georges-Louis Lesage, Jean Le Rond d'Alembert and Alexis-Claude Clairaut concerning the law of universal gravitation, various mathematical problems and the movement of the lunar apsis. Thus, I endeavour to present a whole series of practices and tacit rules, which are constitutive of the scientific process and allow us to establish what could be defined as an ethic of controversy.
