Lachenal, Guillaume (Author)
This article examines a well-known episode of the medical history of Cameroon: Dr Eugene Jamot's campaign against sleeping sickness. Through this case study, the article analyses how, in the context of the Mandate system, colonial medicine was at the same time a matter of patriotism and the site of an internationalization of colonial debates and practices. Drawing from the 24 guillaume lachenal theoretical framework of histoire croisée, the article situates the trajectory of Jamot in the context of exchanges between German and French doctors following the First World War. This Franco-German crossing was the occasion of technical transfers and international comparisons, intertwining the German history of French colonial medicine, the medical history of the Cameroonian mandate, and the postcolonial history of German tropical medicine, which was redeployed in Europe after 1918.
