During the 1946 poliomyelitis epidemic in Montreal, the postponement of opening schools rapidly became a public debate that allows us to explore the different views of a series of social actors who attempted to impose their authority in the handling of the epidemic. This article explores the persistence of the judgments made by medical and school authorities around the capacity of parents to take care of their children's health, as well as it sheds light on the reinforcement of parents as social actors in postwar Quebec. Understood in its broader context, this case study also allows us to explore the strong values of childhood in the immediate postwar society.
