Baillargeon, Denyse (Author)
Between 1928 and 1950, the Sainte-Justine Children's Hospital in Montreal held a yearly public subscription campaign to reduce its operating deficit. Beyond what it can tell us about the ways of financing this hospital, this initiative can be seen as an interesting case of moral regulation that merits analysis as such. Sources on the annual Sainte-Justine campaign indeed show that in order to obtain public support, the hospital had to create a sense of responsibility towards sick children by engaging in a vast enterprise of popular education that did not exclude a certain amount of pressure. After briefly examining the circumstances that brought Sainte-Justine to mount a public appeal on a regular basis, this article examines the rhetoric of the material organization of these campaigns as a way to show how both dimensions combined to change the sentiments of Montrealers about their responsibility towards Sainte-Justine's children and to pay out of pocket for them, assuring its success, at least for the period under study here.
