Nach 1945 erlebte die deutsche Volkswirtschaftslehre eine tiefgreifende Transformation: Die ältere, stark historisch und soziologisch orientierte deutsche Nationalökonomie wurde nach dem Vorbild der Wirtschaftswissenschaft, wie sie in England und den USA gelehrt wurde, umgestaltet. Gleichzeitig verschmolz die Disziplin institutionell mit der Betriebswirtschaftslehre und löste die einst engen Verbindungen zu Soziologie und Rechtswissenschaften. Jan-Otmar Hesse zeigt, wie - unabhängig vom Paradigmenstreit zwischen Keynesianismus und Monetarismus - in der Bundesrepublik eine mathematisch und axiomatisch argumentierende Wirtschaftstheorie entstand.
