Martins dos Reis, Claudio Ricardo (Author)
This study aims to reconstruct part of the argument of Charles Darwin in The origin of species. First, his explanation will be examined on specific cases, such as the origin and differentiation of races of the domestic pigeon. Hereafter, will be performed a review of the Darwinian argument about empirical regularities, as the distribution patterns and variation of organisms. Finally, Darwin's explanation on general principles will be analyzed, such as the relations of animals and plants in the struggle for existence and the principle of divergence of character, explaining its relationship with the principle of natural selection. Darwin's arguments are clearly structured in premises and conclusion. Furthermore, will be considered his philosophical assumptions and his use of argumentative strategies for purposes of persuasion. Keywords: argumentative strategies; Darwin, Charles; empirical regularities; principle of divergence
