The English algebraists network is above all known as the pioneer of a purely symbolical view of algebra. This view is supposed to have fostered its development as the study of abstract structures. If the Mécanique Céleste of Pierre-Simon Laplace (1746-1827) is often credited as one of the main factors of the renewal of researches on algebraic analysis in England, the Théorie Analytique des Probabilités (1812) is much less often mentioned. Its methods and its contents have yet promoted the development of a unified approach to mathematical knowledge, for scholars as well as for practitioners, as an epistemological and political points of view. This theory has been explored in two stages: firstly for its methods by the first generation of algebraists, then for its contents, mainly by Augustus de Morgan (1806-1871). George Boole (1815-1864), reading the Théorie Analytique with the filter of symbolical algebra, opened the scope of a logical analysis of probabilities.
