O âmbar de Ambrósio Fernandes Brandão: um registro equivocado (2011)

unapi

Being concluded in 1618, the work of Ambrósio Fernandes Brandão entitled Diálogos das Grandezas do Brasil (Dialogues on the Brazilian greatness) is one of the main works published in the 17th Century. It showed the reality and potential of this new land. Reading the six dialogues between the two characters, Bradônio and Alviano, we can get precious information about the local customs, agriculture, history, fauna, flora, as well as the first debate on the occurrence and origin of the ambergris and amber (the product of the fossilization of gymnosperms and angiosperms resins). Even if Brandão had not announced the first finding amber in Brazil, certainly he contributed to it by providing information that clarified the origin of the ambergris got from whales and fossilized resins. On the other hand, Ambrósio Brandão had also provided information about the existence of caves in the Brazilian countryside since the colonial territory was poorly settled. More than three hundred years after the publication of the book, the report of fossilized resins in the Brazilian territory became known, and the assumptions of Ambrósio Brandão were finally confirmed.
