After being found in a mining site in the surroundings of a small village named Prados, located at the County of Rio das Mortes, the skeleton of a huge animal yet unknown to local inhabitants drew the attention of the Minas Gerais captaincy governor in 1785. In order to study it, he called the sergent-major and naturalist Simão Pires Sardinha who wrote an excellent report on the occurrence of this huge animal later known as the monster of Prados. This report, which is little known by the Brazilian paleontological community, reveals the importance of Simão Pires Sardinha as a naturalist updated with the scientific knowledge at those times, from the then recent descriptions of fossils to the pre-Lavoisieran Chemistry.
