Silva, Paulo José Carvalho da (Author)
The Hippocratic-Galenic medical tradition, in particular the widespread genus of health regimen, gives special attention to what is eaten as a fundamental guidance for the preservation of health and life. Consequently sermons, religious instructions, allegorical novels among other sources on the issue of health deal with alimentation. The key notion is moderation, the point of convergence between the concern of the physiological balance and virtuous habit. This research proposes to investigate the sources of Luso-Brazilian culture and European modern period on alimentation to allow an epistemological discussion on the convergence between moral and life sciences on the basis of health practices. In a broader perspective of a proposal for an art of well living, variants of early modern regimes discuss alimentation as a critical relation between outside world and inwardness. In this sense, the category of gluttony appears as a transgression of a rule that is supposed to be natural.
...MoreDescription Explores ideas on alimentation and health in Luso-Brazilian culture in the period from the 15th to the 18th centuries.
