Giambattista Brocchi (1772--1826) e as paleoheteromorfias na alvorada do século XIX (2012)

Italian geology of the Settecento is recognised as the most advanced in its time. Charles Lyell reffered to it in his famous Principles of Geology as having achieved paramount advances. He cited the works of Antonio Vallisneri and Anton-Lazzaro Moro, who published important books in the first half of the Settecento, as well as the bitter argument amongst Alberto Fortis, Serafino Volta and Domenico Testa, which occurred at the end of that century, as another important event towards the understanding of the great revolutions the surphace of our planet undergone. Recently Giambattista Brocchi was recognised as a forerunner of evolutionary biology, for his original contributions based on the fauna of the Tertiary. The historiographic version which did not recognise his important contributions has been revised, mainly by the writings of Paolo Rossi, who acknowledged the modern tradition, in line with the Galilean school. This article presents a new reading of some pieces of the personal library of Giambattista Brocchi, providing a new insight in order to understand difficulties modern geology had to face during the turn of that century. It is argued that Brocchi was an important forerunner of the understanding of paleoheteromorphies in the European context, recognized as the focal point of the controversy between modern geologists and rational catholic theologians.
