Failure of research programmes can say something about the historical times in which they appeared. With this in mind, we review the life and career of Dominik von Kripp, an ornithologist and evolutionary biomechanist working principally in the early 1930s. von Kripp's publications and an unpublished manuscript suggest an innovative research programme that combined biomechanical analysis with taxonomy and evolutionary biology in birds, hadrosaurs, ichthyosaurs and pterosaurs. Despite its publication in well-respected journals, this work was summarily ignored and then eclipsed by the evolutionary synthesis and the German response to it.
