It is only within the past decade or so, especially in the work of H. Tarrant (1985. 1993) and R. Chiaradonnit.1 that attention has been brought to an impor-tant excursus on epistemology in Porphyry's Commentary on the Harmonics of Ptolemy (Miring ed. 1932/1978). Here, in the context of a discussion of reason (Xoyoc) and sense (Gictonatc) as the criteria of judgment. Porphyry launches into a description of how intelligible forms become emmattered. followed by what may well be the Tyrian philosopher's most explicit account of how the human cognitive process deals with such emmattered forms in the course of its percep-tive and intellectual processes.
