Plotinus' Two Interpretations of Timaeus 35a (2011)

unapi

The Timaeus is one of Plato's most difficult dialogues, and 35a ranks among its most obscure passages (Taylor 1928, 106: Cornford 1937. 59). The grammar is problematic, but the grammar. as Sextus Empiricus Against the Professors i 301-309 famously observed, is only the beginning. Nevertheless, the passage attracted the attention of Plato's successors, who found in it a key to Plato's doc-trine of the soul and. therefore, to the soul's true nature. Plotinus describes the passage as 'divinely riddling' (TIS Oeku; ilvtykvov. iv 21412.49).1 He comments explicitly on its interpretation in seven works that span his career (iv 2(4), iv 9 181, iii 41151. iv 1[21], vi 41221, iv 31271. and i 1153)), and its influence is evident in the language and method of at least three others (iii 9(13?), ii 2[141. and i 81511). His treatment of the text sheds light on the text itself while touching on the issues central to his psychology.
