Syrianus c. 437) was born in Alexandria but went to Athens to study philos-ophy. He was said to be a follower (orta66;) of lamblichus. but this does not mean at all that he slavishly imitated him) He has left three works to us, a com-mentary on Aristotle's Metaphysics iii-iv and xiii-xiv. two others on I lermo-genes' GREEK and GREEK respectively. We also have an introduction to the EEO Wow that used to be ascribed to him. but the attribution is probably false.= Besides, he is credited with a commentary on the Phaedrus that may have come down to us under the name of his disciple Hermias of Alexandria.3 Other sources, too, testify that he gave lectures not only on that dialogue, but on the flutedº and the be anima as well, which reflects his interest in the theory of the sou1.4 As the commentaries on Hermogenes' treatises are dealing with rhetorical issues, it is only the partial commentary on the Metaphysics that can be of real help to reveal his views on the issue to be discussed. Occasional references will also be made to the commentary on the Phaedrus although we have to be cau-tious because of the doubts concerning attribution.
