Iliushina, T. V. (Author)
The Konstantin Institute of Surveying in Moscow took an active role in expeditions that explored and mapped the vast territory of the Russian Empire, especially Siberia. One key episode involved the expedition sent to Eastern Siberia by the Imperial Russian Geographical Society in 1855 - 1858, in which the Institute's employees and alumni determined astronomical coordinates of more than 70 points spread over 10000 miles of travel routes. In addition to providing the basis for the mapping of Eastern Siberia, they collected data on the geology, meteorology, flora and fauna, and ethnography of the area. This paper provides some little known biographical information on the institute's alumni and analyses their role in founding the school of studies of the Russian Far East.
