A novel philosophical understanding of the nature of scientific knowledge emerged from Popper's idea about the impossibility of absolute verification of scientific theories. One could augment his anti-positivist approach with a fractal-like model of scientific evolution, in which alternative theories and research programs appear as branching and bifurcation points. The fractal view of the development of science contradicts the model of cumulative growth that, despite its shortcomings, still recurs frequently in the history of science.
