Altshuler, N. S. (Author)
Larionov, A. L. (Author)
Theoretical physicist S. A. Altshuler, professor at Kazan University and correspondent member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences since 1976, is mostly known for his pioneering work in the fields of magnetic radiospectroscopy, quantum electronics, and nuclear magnetism. In 1952 he predicted the phenomenon of acoustic paramagnetic resonance (APR), which led to the development of a new field of physics-quantum acoustics. During the 1950s and 1960s, Altshuler established a leading research school in the study of magnetic resonance, which acquired international reputation. This essay presents a series of new archival documents about the scientist and his private reminiscences, in which Altshuler turns to the history of his family in Vitebsk, school years in Nizhny Novgorod, education at Kazan University, and his experiences as a graduate student under I. E. Tamm. The authors describe his pedagogical activities at Kazan University prior to the war, his service at the front, and the resumption of research after the war. A June 1945 letter from Tamm to Altshuler comments on postwar government efforts to promote physics education in provincial universities. Other documents relate to the history of research on electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR), the writing of a well-known monograph on the topic by Altshuler and B. M. Kozyrev, and the physicist's scientific and private contacts with Russian and foreign scientists.
