This essay presents the introduction to the first four volumes of the upcoming jubilee edition of M. V. Lomonosov's collected works. The authors acquaint the reader with the essence of Lomonosov's researches in the natural sciences, devoting primary attention to the discipline of physics, which occupied the central place in the investigations by the first Russian scientist. The article strives towards a fully objective evaluation of Lomonosov's accomplishments, concluding with the thought formulated already by A. S. Pushkin, that Lomonosov not only founded the first Russian university, but represented by himself, the first university in our country.
