The invention of linear programming by L. V. Kantorovich (1912 - 1986) had roots in concrete economic tasks of the 1930s and in his mathematical research in the area of functional analysis. Kantorovich's first publication on the topic, "Mathematical methods of organization and planning of production" (1939), was born out of the solution of the so-called "plywood trust problem." The current paper offers a contemporary analysis of this and other prewar works by Kantorovich. It also discusses further developments in his methods of 1939 as well as some of his investigations of the later period up to 1960s. The recognition of Kantorovich's now undisputed priority and contribution followed a long and difficult path, both in his native country and abroad.
