The essay discusses the social, cultural and scientific contexts of Darwin jubilee celebrations in 1909, 1959, and 1984. With regard to the current jubilee, it pays particular attention to the tension between evolution and creationism, to advances over the last twenty years in molecular biology, paleontology and anthropology, and to the positions of various confessions, including the Vatican and the Anglican Church. The survey covers the main events in England organized by various societies (conferences, symposia and services, exhibitions and festivals, issuing of postal stamps, dedications of monuments and memorial plaques) as well as a series of newest publications introducing archival documents and analyzing Darwin's works and their lasting impact.
