I. R Pavlov regarded the "purposeful reflex" as a fundamental form of vital energy and usually illustrated it with the example of collecting as the "purest, typical... and widespread" form of its development in humans. Himself an avid collector throughout his entire life, he built four full-fledged collections in philately, entomology, books, and paintings. This essay details the formation of these collections, which demonstrate the depth of the scientist's interests and emotional aspects of his life, and provide new information about his character, worldview, and moral convictions.
