Drei Pandemien der Beulenpest haben in den vergangenen 1500 Jahren ungezählte Menschen getötet; an der zweiten Pandemie im Anschluß an das 14. Jahrhundert starben möglicherweise bis zu 40% der gesamten Bevölkerung. Zu den Ausgangsorten der Pest und den Übertragungsrouten, eventuell über Nomadenvölker, sind verschiedene Deutungen veröffentlicht worden. Mehrfach wurden Schlußfolgerungen gezogen, die zweite Pandemie habe zunächst in China verheerende Verwüstung angerichtet, ehe sie schließlich Europa erreichte. Diese Darstellung des Verlaufs der Pandemie läßt sich nach Sichtung der historischen Quellen zur demographischen Entwicklung in China, die ganz anders verlaufen ist als in Europa, nicht aufrecht erhalten. Die demographische Realität ist aus der medizinischen Literatur ablesbar. Wenn es wirklich irgendwo im 14. Jahrhundert eine Pest-Epidemie gegeben hat, so wurde diese jedenfalls in China nicht wahrgenommen. China war von dem fernen Europa weitgehend isoliert, nicht zuletzt auf Grund einer Bevorzugung von See-Routen, die für weniger verletztlich gehalten wurden als die Handelswege zu Lande. Europa bildete ein eng verknüpftes Geflecht im 14. Jahrhundert; kurze Handelswege verbanden die einzelnen Regionen. China war ebenfalls intern eng verknüpft, aber die Landwege und mehr noch die Seewege, die aus China hinausführten, waren lang und bildeten ein fast unüberwindliches Hindernis für die Migration von Ratten und Flöhen. Erst die Frachtdampfer des 19. Jahrhunderts ermöglichten die Ausbreitung der Pest über den Indischen Ozean.
