The rail network has been a decisive factor for interpreting the uneven economic development and the distribution of population within a given place. This article analyzes the relationship between the evolution of the railway network and that of urban growth in Portugal, Spain, and France, adopting a long-term perspective and comparing experiences in different geographical settings. The selection of these three countries was based on their varied railway policies and urbanization processes. The aim was to examine closely an area in Europe with enough disparities to provide a rough idea of the kind of relationships between railways and population that other areas in Europe might exhibit
