Es ist bekannt, dass mehr als 2.500 Hörer dem berühmtesten deutschen Physikunterricht des 18. Jahrhunderts an der Göttinger Universität folgten. Jakob Friedrich Dyckerhoff besuchte 1796/97 die Grundkurse über Physik, Chemie, Astronomie und physische Geographie, schrieb und zeichnete fleißig mit. So ist ein einzigartiges Zeugnis von Lichtenbergs spektakulärer Unterrichtspraxis erhalten geblieben. Dyckerhoffs "Skizzenbuch der Experimentalphysik" liefert über 300 Zeichnungen von Experimenten, Instrumenten, Apparaten und Modellen, die für diese Ausgabe vollständig reproduziert und umfangreich kommentiert wurden. Gunhild Berg hebt die Modernität von Lichtenbergs Kolleg hervor, das Studenten und Forscher, aber auch angehende Praktiker und Ingenieure wie Dyckerhoff begeisterte.
