Biographical essay, beginning: Hans Wußing born 15 October 1927 in Waldheim in Saxony and passed away 26 April 2011 in Leipzig, was the most influential and most versatile historian of science in East Germany, the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which perished in 1989/90. In the historiography of mathematics Wußing's name will survive for instance with his seminal work on the genesis of the modern notion of a group.
