Downplaying Difference: Historical Accounts of African American Midwives and Contemporary Struggles for Midwifery (2010)

unapi

This article investigates African American midwives' memoirs, focusing on how they minimize discussions of racial difference and discrimination. The authors provide a brief history of midwifery and maternal healthcare in the United States, examining professionalization, the American Medical Association (AMA), and the U.S. Sheppard-Towner Maternity and Infancy Protection Act. Co-authorship of a number of memoirs is analyzed, including "Listen to Me Good: The Life Story of an Alabama Midwife" by Margaret Charles Smith and Linda Janet Holmes, "Motherwit: An Alabama Midwife's Story" by Onnie Lee Logan and Katherine Clark, and "Memories of a Black Lay Midwife from Northern Neck Virginia" by Claudine Curry Smith and Mildred Baker Roberson.
