Robert Louis Stevenson's South Seas Crossings (2010)

unapi

When Stevenson was in the South Seas he was well aware of the contamination from the colonial powers. Stevenson did not, however, dwell exclusively upon the destructive incursions that reinforced the idea of a fixed difference between Western and Island cultures. He was more interested in the complex nature of the cultural exchanges between the Europeans and the native populations. In his Pacific writing Stevenson concentrated on these contact zones and identified the places where Westerners and indigenous peoples met and mixed to create hybrids neither completely European nor completely native. This essay focuses on the various ways in which Stevenson experienced and manifested this cross-fertilization.
