Medical history has turned into a growing field over the past few decades. However, the more weird and wonderful manifestations of conditions once perceived as diseases or physical and/or psychological aberrations have rarely merited rigorous scholarly attention. Rohmann has chosen dansomania as subject of his critical analysis, moving from the purely medical to an investigation of the phenomenon according to historical semantics. Dansomania occurred under various names (among others St Vitus or St John's dance) between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries, centred in the region around the rivers Rhine, Moselle and Maas.
