Le concept d'incertitude technologique a longtemps été confiné aux recherches en gestion. Mais le phénomène qu'il décrit se manifeste dans la société contemporaine bien au-delà de ce que les médias appellent les firmes technologiques . Cet article suggère un champ conceptuel et heuristique plus large pour son application. Il présente une étude de cas portant sur le marché automobile aux États-Unis. Celle-ci montre comment une combinaison de choix sociaux, politiques, technologiques, et gestionnaires effectués depuis la fin du XXe siècle a engendré une forme plus significative, et très répandue, d'incertitude technologique chez les consommateurs d'automobiles et chez les garagistes. En conclusion, elle suggère que l'importance de l'incertitude technologique va bien au-delà de ce cas spécifique, en le resituant dans le cadre philosophique du paradigme de l'appareil élaboré par Albert Borgmann.
