The article discusses the aerial application of pesticides in Kansas from 1945 to 1980, with particular focus on the pilots referred to as "thistles," who sprayed aerial pesticides indiscriminately with bootlegged chemicals. An overview of the concerns of farmers and the aerial applicators regarding use of chemicals on crops, including in regard to community welfare and the environmental aspects of chemical exposure and toxicity, is provided. An overview of the Kansas state laws regulating the purchase, production and application of chemicals is also provided.
