Studying the increased use of software applications: Insights from the case of the American petroleum industry, 1950--2000 (2002)

unapi

Description Software applications represents a new field of study within the history of computers. The author discusses how to do research on the history of applications, using the example of the petroleum industry to illustrate the approach. It involves discussing interactions among technologies, software, business issues, and industries, and argues that without such a holistic approach it becomes difficult to appreciate the historical importance of computers and their effects on society.
