Landscaping the Ruhr as a vacation wonderland: Building the twentieth century out of the seventeenth (2004)

unapi

Description Brandenburg-Prussian officials worked with older representative organizations - the Erbentag and Landtag - when dealing with western territories - Cleves and Mark - gained in 1609. Those organizations provided Prussian officials with local influence and information. Based on Baron vom Stein's experience in Cleves and Mark, Prussian reforms early in the nineteenth century retained institutions mediating between Berlin and Prussia's heterogeneous territories. One result was that members of local systems of self governance participated in developing railroads, water systems, and electric power. In 1913, Prussian legislation established a water company (Ruhrverband) to provide the region with drinking water. In the 1920s, the Ruhrverband joined a power company (RWE) to resolve problems in water purification and electrification by building Lake Hengstey, the first in a series of lakes that would help make the Ruhr a vacation wonderland.
