Wissenschaftliche Kontakte, Bestrebungen und finanzielle Probleme der Familie “d'Estrees” (2007/2008)

unapi

This contribution provides information about the interest of Cardinal César d'Estrées in astronomy and in observation tools that brought him in contact with Colbert. And it also examines the ambitions of the cardinal and his family which also had brought forth high ranking navy officers and diplomats, very interested in geography and science. The author remembers, that the family's relations to Rome and Italy dated back to the beginning of the 17th century and that those nominated official representatives of the French king usually had to meet excessive expenditure. All these expanses, among them also those of the construction of the great globes dedicated to Louis XIV, brought about a disastrous financial situation and endangered the existence of an important real property holding.
