Neue Erkenntnisse über Vincenzo Coronellis Geburt und sein Libro dei Globi (2007/2008)

unapi

Further to an article in which it was claimed that cosmographer Vincenzo Coronelli was born in Ravenna, I conducted a research in the archives of Ravenna and Venice in order to find a reliable document regarding Coronelli's birth. After studying in detail what A. Sartori wrote about Coronelli's brother's family in Ravenna, with his nephew Vincenzo Maria Coronelli's birth, I pursued my research in the Historical Archives of the Patriarchate of Venice. There I found the cosmographer's certificate of Baptism in the church of San Julian, thus discovering that his second name was Rocco and not Maria; therefore Coronelli is unequivocally Venetian. I conducted a vast research on Il Libro dei Globi, published in 1999, but, since a few copies have appeared in the antique market, I bring new evidence. In 2007, the San Marco's auction house has put up on sale another copy bought from the Cassa di Risparmio di Venezia. This unknown copy, with the handwritten title of Libro de' Globi del P. Coronelli, shows several similarities with that dating back to 1698 and owned by the National Archives of Canada in Ottawa. Consequently, I maintain that this copy could have been one of the first fabricated by Coronelli.
