Der Niederschlag von Entdeckungsreisen auf Globen des frühen 16. Jahrhunderts (2007/2008)

unapi

Voyages of discovery in the 16th century can not only be traced on old maps but also on early terrestrial globes. We note that the newly discovered world, named after Amerigo Vespucci, appears as an independent continent called America` already on Martin Waldseemüller's gores of 1507. Subsequent Portuguese and Spanish discoveries are mentioned on the `Hunt-Lenox Globe' (`Terra de Brazil') and on gores erroneously attributed to Leonardo da Vinci (`Terra Florida'). For his globes dated 1515 and 1520, the Franconian astronomer Johannes Schöner essentially derived his geographical knowledge from Universalis Cosmographia of 1507 as well as from Carta Marina Navigatoria of 1516, but he also included new findings (like on the so-called `Green Globe'), as exemplified by Schöner's representation of the South Polar mainland (`Brasilie Regis'). The gores dated 1523/24 attributed to him show the voyage around the globe of the Portuguese explorer Fernão de Magelhães. Further indications of voyages of exploration are to be found on the Paris `Gilt Globe' (1528) and on the `Nancy Globe' (1535), which proclaim a contiguous Asian-American continent. The overseas activities of the merchant family Welser in India and Venezuela are not only indicated on a triptych but also on the `Welser Globe', which, as a result of heraldic research, must be dated around 1575.
