Der Erdglobus, der Amerika benannte: Die Überlieferung der Globensegmente von Martin Waldseemüller (2007/2008)

unapi

In the 1990s, the historic book holdings of the town Offenburg have been newly catalogued by the University Library Freiburg, supported by the Stiftung Kulturgut Baden-Württemberg. In doing so, in a 16th century volume a part of a set of gores of a terrestrial globe of Martin Waldseemüller (around 1470-1522) was found. This is the oldest printed terrestrial globe which represents the new world cartographically and uses the name ,America` for the continent discovered newly. Merely four copies of this rarity became generally known to this day. The contribution explains the historical circumstances of the emergence and tradition of the globe, reports on the thrilling story of his discovery and of the unusual features of the Offenburg copy, which was obviously required by the Franciscan cloister there at the end of the 17th century.
