Entwicklungsgeschichte digitaler Globen (2009/2010)

unapi

The present article discusses the development of globes influenced by digital in- formation and communication technologies. In 2005, responding to expected futu- re challenges arising in globe research, the 'Hyperglobe Research Group' (HRG) was founded at the University of Vienna (Institute for Geography and Regional Research); the spherical display (Ø 1.5 m) installed was the first of its kind in any European research institution. The possibilities offered by animation, interactivity and by 3D-technologies constitute the driving force behind the spreading of digital globes. Varieties of digital globes that have evolved as well as their respective fields of application are discussed in detail. Anyone may judge for themselves whether 'experiencing' digital globes will contribute to the replacement of analogous globes by digital ones in the future.
