Zur Entstehung der Manuskriptgloben des Heinrich Arboreus und des Philipp Apian (2009/2010)

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek keeps an artistically handcrafted pair of manuscript globes from the 16th century whose history of creation can be traced very well through written sources: The Bavarian Duke Albrecht V. (1550-1579), founder of the Court Library in Munich, had seen an impressive, non-preserved globe pair in the trading family Fugger's Augsburg residence. Albrecht wanted to acquire the globes in 1572, which failed because of their poor state of repair. He therefore decided to commission a new globe pair for the library of his 'Antiquarium' in Munich, built during 1568-1571. For this purpose, he first commissioned the Munich sculptor and stone-mason Hans Aernhofer to create two mountings ("… zwai Khugel gestel …"), which served as robust support for the globes until the second world war. They were, however, inadvertently exchanged with each other during their restoration in the 20th century. From 1573 onwards, the professor of Greek language at the Landesuniversität Ingolstadt, Heinrich Arboreus, S.J. (c. 1532-1602), was engaged in the scientific elaboration of the celestial sphere. The mechanics and armature of the mounting was the work of the dukedom's clock-maker Ulrich Schniep; painting was accomplished by the Munich painter Hans Donauer the Elder († 1596). A manuscript by Arboreus containing two poems closely connected with the celestial sphere has also been preserved; probably the poems were meant to be inserted in the celestial sphere's two cartouches that have remained empty. This oeuvre completed, the cartographer Philipp Apian (1531-1589) was commissioned with the geographical elaboration of the terrestrial sphere. For this purpose he was granted leave of absence from Tübingen University, where he had fled because of his religious belief. The terrestrial sphere, which is dedicated to its patron, was completed in late 1576. The inscription of the globe's numerous legends and cartouches containing many references to recent discoveries was carried out by Georg Rueshamer. This globe pair, unique in its artisanship, is among the most beautiful and largest created in the 16th century.
