Zwei außergewöhnliche Globen im Oberösterreichischen Landesmuseum (2009/2010)

unapi

Along with numerous attractive old globes, the Upper Austrian State Museum is displaying a 'globe sundial' and a so-called 'horological globe', two simple exhi- bits which are nevertheless extremely interesting from a scientific viewpoint. Both items were made in the 18th century, possibly by converting older terrestrial globes. In keeping with the educational ideas prevalent in the Age of Enlightenment, they appear to have been used as teaching aids in a higher school. The sphere of the sundial was converted into a 'spherical' dial and a horizontal system of coordinates centred on Prague was added to its original equator system. The half meridian circle also had to act as a gnomon. A mechanical clock movement is built into the interior of the 'horological globe'; this makes parts of the globe move, thus facilitating the illustration of more compli- cated methods of determining geographical latitude and longitude.
