A distinction can be made between two epistemological ages in the measurement of crime: the first where it is con-fined to the reckoning of court activity, the other where alternative sources of knowledge enter the game. The first paradigm emerges in the late 18th century in Europe and develops during the next century: court statistics, as soon as they appear, have been used despite some hesitation for the measurement of crime and by means of it, of the moral state of the nation. During the course of the 20th century, police statistics, with varying speed depending on the countries, have substituted for court statistics in the measurement of crime. In the second part of this century, more alternative instruments will be resorted to: the most distinctive are victimisation surveys, the development of which is reported on by the authors. Through the very technical problem of the measurement of crime, this paper broaches both the conceptual issues raised by the study of crime and the associated methodological problems in quantitative sociology.
