Ash, Mitchell G. (Author)
In this text a number of problems related to discourses and practices of visualisation in natural scientific psychology from Descartes to the present are presented and discussed. The argument begins with the dilemma created by Cartesian (substantialist) dualism. Because this doctrine limits natural science to extended, meaning visible and quantifiable phenomena, mental events, which by definition are not extended in space, appear to be inaccessible to natural science. The philosopher Kant, experimental psychologists of the nineteenth century, and modern neuroscientists have all tried to resolve this dilemma in various ways, but never with complete success.
