Period from the end of the 19th century up to the middle of the 20th century -- with all the discoveries and achievements re- lated to ionizing radiation and radiation sources -- can without doubt be classified as the golden age of physics. It is closely followed by observations of a large variety of radiation effects, culminating in the years 1950-1970, which period can be called the golden age of radiation research. Practical applications of ionizing radiation in different fields were also not long in coming and radiation industry lives through a pronounced boom in the 1970s. Examples of successful applications are evident also in the Czech Lands, such as radiation sterilization of medical products, polymer modifications, preservation of objects of art, semiconductor modifications, and use of radiation in agriculture or for foodstuffs disinfestation.
