In the German States where a qualitative tradition of Statistics early institutionalized, the history of statistics long didn't give much attention to the diffusion of the Political Arithmetic. Far to make up a substantial current, that might have inspired innovative practices, this tradition was yet attested in Germany, under various forms and places. It is first in the polemic between statisticians about the spreading of figures in Statistics that the reference to the political arithmetic was used to depreciate any numerical form and calculation. At the beginning of the 19th century, as the statistical offices were founded, in Prussia for instance, the political arithmetic was on the contrary a way to qualify the ability of the new statistical profession. Then, during the first decades of the 19th century, the expression refers mainly to any calculation on mortality.
