I am pointing out here an evolution, between the XIIIth and XIVth centuries, in problems of division of shares discussed in commercial arithmetics on the occasion of breaches of contracts. On this basis, I wish to put forward the hypothesis that the so-called points problem or better said the problem of the division of stakes, formulated and solved as soon as the XIVth century, can only find its origin from this period onward and in this specific context.
