La modernización de la ciencia en México y la Política de Buena Vecindad en el caso de la astronomía (2005)

A finales del período presidencial de Lázaro Cárdenas, Luis Enrique Erro, diplomático mexicano aficionado a la astronomía, y Harlow Shapley, Director del Harvard College Observatory, desataron un proceso que llevó a la astronomía mexicana al encuentro con la astrofísica moderna. Las causas que hicieron posible el demorado objetivo de modernizar la astronomía mexicana remiten a un complejo proceso en el cual factores tales como la personalidad, el horizonte intelectual, la posición política y los intereses vitales de estos personajes tejieron una trama que conectó sus experiencias de vida con hechos de otra envergadura, como son la lucha política en México y las relaciones internacionales entre ambos países durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. La situación en que se encontraba la lucha por el poder y aquellas relaciones internacionales ofrecen excelentes referencias para comprender los alcances de esa oportunidad histórica en la consecución de un proyecto de modernización científica como el de Erro.
