In 1746, an interesting correspondence began between d'Alembert and Euler which remained amicable until 1750. Euler displayed great admiration for d'Alembert's scientific work and his capacities of 'penetration'. However, there were profound differences between the two mathematicians and their relationship did not manage to turn into friendship, remaining rather formal. After 1751, a period of bitter hostility broke out between them which seems to have originated from Euler's ambiguous behaviour during the Berlin prize competition of 1750. The years that followed were characterised by personal and scientific disputes which were exacerbated by the stance of Frederick II of Prussia who showed a clear preference for the illuminist d'Alembert over Euler. The hostility between the two mathematicians only ended in 1763 when d'Alembert finally rejected the appointment as President of the Berlin Academy.
