In keeping with the expectations of the genre, d'Alembert's academic eulogies describe the life of French Academicians. But since they also include philosophical comments, they can be read too as a piece of Enlightenment propaganda, which can be problematic given the official status of these texts. The example of the eulogy of Bossuet is highly significant in this respect. Its evolution can be studied, from two successive manuscript versions to the published version, in two stages: the text itself, in a collection published by d'Alembert in 1779; and the notes relating to the text, which only appear in the Histoire des membres de l'Académie française, published by Condorcet in 1787, after d'Alembert's death. Given the values d'Alembert intends to promote, the ideological positions of the Bishop of Meaux are obviously an issue, as can be seen when d'Alembert deals with theological quarrels or the question of ecclesiastical and even civil toleration. D'Alembert's solution consists in transferring his most polemical remarks into the notes, which remained unpublished during his lifetime. But it is notable that some of the developments in the final manuscript version of the notes (on toleration, or on the obstacles raised against the spreading of Enlightenment) were never published. It is difficult to say whether this decision was d'Alembert's or Condorcet's, but we can be certain that these considerations, still polemical in the 1770s, sounded somewhat obsolete by the 1780s.
