Daniel Bernoulli and Jean le Rond d'Alembert are the autors of two major works of their century, i.e. Hydrodynamica in 1738, and the Traité de Dynamique in 1743, respectively. Despite their temporal closeness, their approaches are substantially different. We can exemplify that, by studying the concept of mechanical 'work' in their works. It is surprising to notice that it only appears in Bernoulli's treatise, and never in d'Alembert's. We suggest here that the differences in focus of the two savants, as well as their epistemological choices, are responsible for their different ways. This study will be revealing of the conditions of emergence of this concept, showing that it only appears in practical applications, in a science that we could call engineering, and that it is totally absent of the theoretical science.
