Guilbaud, Alexandre (Author)
We sketch a comparison between hydrodynamical theories as expressed by John Bernoulli in his Hydraulica (1742) and d'Alembert in his Traité des fluides (1744). To this end, we use in particular Abraham Gotthelf Kaestner's memoir, Johan Bernoulli hydraulica contra Dom. d'Alembert objectiones (1769). Here we are especially concerned in the status of Leibniz's law of continuity. This law is famous as a touchstone in the debate about theories of collisions during the first half of the 18th century; but its influence on fluid dynamics, starting from Daniel Bernoulli's Hydrodynamics. (1738) was neglected by historians of science. In our paper, we show how the use of the law of continuity in John Bernoulli's Hydraulica appears to be basic and influential for d'Alembert's treatise.
